OVCTC FFA had their first experience with the Aquarium management CDE in Columbus, Ohio.  The team of (front row) Luke Parks, Caleb DeAtley and (back row) Kayla Hawes and Isabella Crum placed first in the district and 16th in the state. These students had to take a written test, participate in hands on practicums with water testing, filtration, media setup, and proper feeding.  Special thanks to Ashely Daniel at Hillsboro Petland and her staff for helping us learn new skills!

OVCTC Ag Business class has been preparing for this week for the last few months. This year, we initially had 28 sheep registered for the North American International Livestock Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky. The students each drew numbers to select a market wether and have learned how to care, monitor health and growth, clean, and track weight, calculate average daily gain, and learn the nutrition required for each lamb to prepare for showmanship and a national show highlighted on the “green shavings”! An immense amount of planning and preparing goes into this class project, and the program can’t thank the following individuals and businesses enough for their help in reaching this point. A very neat part of this lamb project is having our very own alumni, Wyatt Manning, assist us at NAILE by hauling equipment and helping us shear each of one of the students lambs. The students show in both crossbred and purebred divisions, and there is a lot to learn about each lamb and how they are to be fitted for show. If you are looking for someone to come on-site to your farm to shear sheep or trim hooves, reach out to Mr. Rhonemus and he will put you in contact with Wyatt. Ray Hesler also helped us gather enough sheep for such a large group of participants last second, and we could not have done it without him and his son Rick. Sophia and John Michael were also instrumental in getting us sheep and letting us their own personal equipment. We appreciate the school administration and staff support in this project. Lastly, here is a list of those who additionally worked closely with us to make this experience possible for our students: Crum Farm Supply, Cherry Fork Farm Supply, Kalmbach Feeds, Joe Brammer, Tracy Dendinger, the Sparks Family, Lee and Areena Hesler, Bohrer Veterinary Service, the Butcher Family, OVCTC Construction Tech class, OVCTC Welding class, and thank you to all of the parents and individuals who donated food, drinks, and other items to help our students save some money through the week and to get the best experience possible. More photos to come as they get to hit a national market lamb show ring! Some for the very first time ever showing an animal!

Mr Rhonemus had a “scavenger hunt” for his students that required them to bring in the oldest FFA jacket in order to get all of the fruit orders that he had taken. We had two great contenders for the oldest FFA jacket! Emma Crawford won with her grandfather, Rick Crawford’s FFA jacket from 1969, and Kaden Schweitzer was a close second with his grandfather, Ralph Schweitzer’s FFA jacket from 1970. Another fascinating fact: both of these gentleman were also their Chapter President! Congrats Emma and good work to Kaden also. Thank you to everyone who supports our OVCTC FFA fruit sale fundraiser!
